According to information on the United States Senate website, the Congress building was finally vandalized 36 years after the United States gained independence, when Washington was invaded during the war with the British in 1812-1814.
When the occupying British troops marched on the capital, Washington, in 1814, they set fire to the Capitol building, where Congress, the White House, the president’s residence and other iconic landmarks of the capital were located.
