In a television program he attended, he spoke with Nagehan Alçı, columnist for the CHP Fikri Sağlar Haberturk newspaper, whose words “I doubt he will defend justice when he appears before a turban-wearing judge”, and who has been investigated.
The relevant part of Alçı’s article is the following:
‘I WAS NOT AGAINST THE FREEDOMS OF THE ISLAMIC SECTION’
“I have never been against the freedoms of the Islamic segment, Ms. Nagehan. I am not a prohibitive and oppressive person. I am a libertarian social democrat. When he was Minister of Culture, there was a movie called ‘How did they crush us?’, Which tells what happened in the Courts of Independence from his own Islamic perspective. Our ministry requested that it be banned and not shown in theaters. The soldier was very sensitive about it. I lifted the ban on the film. There will be an atmosphere of freedom. I said all kinds of movies will be played. This is not the only film, but I removed the censorship of many films from the Islamist segment when I was Minister of Culture, Ms. Nagehan. Otherwise, these Islamic films could not be shown in theaters. Because I am a libertarian. I defend the freedom of expression of the ideas to which I oppose. I was against all kinds of censorship in my ministry.
Books by Islamist writers and poets were not allowed in my ministry libraries due to fundamentalism. Leftist writers and poets were not allowed out due to communism, and Kurdish writers due to separatism. I told everyone to be taken to the libraries. Libraries have been liberated in my Ministry. It became an environment where all ideas are free. How can such a person be prohibitive and oppressive? Until my time, Nagehan Hanım had a very clear distinction between right and left in the field of culture. Everyone hired those who were close to their opinion, this cultural space was completely divided according to the minister who came to power. I removed this. For example, I gave some films of our ministry to İsmail Güneş, the director of the Islamist section. I have not made a Ministry that is only open to the left but closed to the right. I have reached a complete social consensus.
Provides noted the following in their comments:
‘EITHER NEVER DEFINE ME OR SPECIFICALLY DISTORTED’
Those who today call me a military man or a coup leader either do not know me at all or especially distort me. When I was Secretary General of the SHP, I said: “The Chief of Staff and the Director General of Meteorology are not different, they both belong to the First Ministry.” Then no one would dare to do that. I have always fought with gangs, mafias and coup plotters within the state. All journalists who have lived through the Susurluk period know this. As you know, the media are trying to present me as a coup plotter, but they are empty propaganda.
HIDDEN IN UNIVERSITIES
I never advocated that veiled students were not admitted to universities. I have always been in favor of freedom in universities. In fact, there was no such ban in universities in 1991-1995.
‘YOU MAY BE A STUDENT WITH TÜRBAN BUT YOU THINK TO BE A JUDGE WITH TURBAN
However, I see the distinction between customer and service provider as a requirement of the democratic principle of secularism. I may be a student wearing a headscarf, but it seems to me against secularism for a judge to wear a headscarf. The public sphere, and especially impartial and independent courts, must be neutralized from all political symbols. This is democratic secularism. Now, some of the intellectuals who wrote very harsh writings about me were the ones who most defended the “Service-Receiver” theory. Especially some outlaws who oppose even college students to wear veils are now attacking me, I laugh at this.
‘CHP BASE IS THINKING LIKE ME’
I am completely behind what I say, Nagehan Hanım, my phones have not been silent for 3 days. The CHP grassroots think like me and 90 percent of the organizations are incredibly supportive. They don’t think like Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. 90 percent believe that political symbols are an obstacle to justice.
‘KEMAL BEY WANTS TO TAKE ME OUT BY DELIVERING THIS EVENT’
Kemal Bey wants to get rid of me completely through this incident, but he can’t. Nagehan Hanım, who is not critical like me, would not have reacted so harshly if someone from her close circle had said the same. He threw me in the middle of the trolls lynching. He never showed loyalty. I don’t mean Demirel said ‘He was my undersecretary’ about Özal, but I am Bakanken. Kemal Bey was the general manager of our government.
Loyalty and trust are important. Kemal Bey does not place this trust in his organizations. How can someone who doesn’t say I’ll be in power instill enthusiasm in the organization? He lost 10 elections. How can we criticize the government when we cannot leave our seats? “
