They are poisoned in the mother’s womb … Even the placenta is microplastic

Microplastic particles have been found for the first time in the placenta, the structure that envelops babies in the uterus and allows the exchange of nutrients, oxygen and other substances between mother and baby.

The health impact of microplastics on the body is not yet known, but scientists said the particles could carry chemicals that could cause long-term damage or disrupt the development of the fetal immune system. Microplastic particles are expected to reach the placenta through the mother’s food, drink, or breath.

MAY BE PACKAGED OR COSMETIC

The study was published in the journal Environment International and was led by Antonio Ragusa, Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hospital San Giovanni Calibita Fatebenefratelli in Rome, Italy.

Although it was stated that the study examined 6 placentas, microplastic particles were detected both in the fetus, on the mother’s side, and in the membrane where the fetus develops.

All the particles analyzed were indicated to be plastics dyed blue, red, orange or pink and the source of the particles could be packaging, paints, cosmetics or personal care products.

MAY BE TRANSPORTED BY CIRCULATION OF BLOOD

The microplastics detected were claimed to be mostly 10 microns (0.01 mm) in size, meaning that the particles were small enough to be transported by the bloodstream. In the study, the researchers concluded that the presence of potentially harmful plastic particles is a major concern due to the important role of the placenta in supporting fetal development and acts as an interface with the external environment.

While it was stated that the possible effects of microplastics on fetuses include slow fetal development, it was emphasized that more studies are needed to obtain information on the effect of microplastics on the placenta.
