“ACRUATIONS ARE CONSEQUENTIAL”
Arrested defendant Osman Kavala stated in his testimony that none of the allegations were based on facts and said: “These charges are diametrically opposed to my view of the world and the activities that I have undertaken. You will realize that the espionage accusation made against me is not easy, and the incidents in Gezi Park were described in the indictment on how the crime occurred. There was a fantastic fiction in which I directed Gezi Park events with people who worked under my instructions. These accusations were made, although there is no evidence that I knew in advance of the Gezi Park incidents and that I tried to overthrow the government. The charges are disconnected from the real facts and in contradiction, “he said.
“I COINCIDLY MEET BARKEY AT THE RESTAURANT”
Kavala said: “I have been against military coups all my life. I criticized the participation of the military in politics. I had no contact with the Gülenist organization. My vision of life does not allow it. The people I meet during my trips abroad are known. I did not have continuous contact with Henri Barkey. “In 2016, we didn’t have any conversations or even phone calls, except that we ran into each other by chance in a restaurant.”
“MY DETENTION HAS BECOME TORTURE”
Referring to the acquittal verdict of the European Court of Human Rights and the 30th Strong Criminal Court in Istanbul, Kavala said: “The Open Society Foundation carried out its activities in accordance with the law. As the manager of this foundation, I am also responsible for the activities, but I did not make a decision alone. “It has become torture that he has been detained for years against orders for acquittal and release.”
The witnesses were heard after the arrested defendant Kavala made his defense. Witness Bayram Sinkaya said that they held a workshop in Büyükada on July 15 and met Henri Barkey there. Witness Sinkaya testified that they made a short speech on whether to continue the workshop even after the attempted coup occurred. The witness Sinkaya also stated that he did not see Osman Kavala in the workshop because he did not know him.
“WE SENT THE CHILDREN TO AMERICA BEFORE WE LEARN HENRI’S ATTEMPTED PUNCH”
The witness Cem Fadıl Bozkurt stated that he called İshak Alaton after the coup attempt due to his illness and said: “When Alaton asked me where I was on Friday, I said that I was not aware of the coup attempt. He told me that his children were going to the United States. When I asked him why he wasn’t going, he said: ‘Even if they take me, I’d die soon. Henri was here last week, we found out about the events, and we sent the children to America for precautionary reasons, ” he said. He died after 1-2 months.
Witness Bozkurt said: “They were close to İshak Alaton and Kavala. Soros was a close friend of İshak Bey. Soros proposed the establishment of the Open Society Foundation. İshak Bey, his daughter and Osman Bey were also on the committee of this foundation, “he said.
Witness Ayhan Ulaş stated that he worked at the hotel where the meeting took place and said: “I do not know Kavala. Henri Barkey came to the hotel where he worked. 2 days after they left the hotel, I saw the Pennsylvania doorbell at the front desk, reported the situation to the police. “I didn’t see Kavala at the hotel,” he said.
REQUESTED THE CONTINUATION OF HIS DETENTION
In the case, the Prosecutor requested the continuation of Kavala’s detention. I wanted Leyla Alaton to be heard as a witness. The court ordered the continuation of Kavala’s arrest. Consequently, the case was postponed until February 5. Leyla Alaton will also be heard as a witness in the case.
