According to information received by the AA correspondent from officials of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the construction of the Çerkezköy-Kapıkule railway line, which started in June last year, is proceeding rapidly.
At the project, where physical progress has reached 25 percent and approximately 2,500 people are employed, the number of employees is expected to reach 3,500-4,000 in the coming days.

TRANSPORTATION TIME WILL SHORTEN
With the project that will connect Edirne, Kırklareli and Tekirdağ to the high-speed train network, the travel time between Halkalı and Kapıkule will decrease from 8 hours to 3.5 hours for freight trains and from 3.5 hours to 1 hour and 35 minutes for passenger trains. The current capacity of the line will also increase 4 times.
With the completion of the project, the cargo transported on the Halkalı-Kapıkule line is expected to reach 9.6 million tons from 1.53 million tons per year, and the number of passengers will increase from 600 thousand to 3.4 million annually .

The project, whose contract was signed for 530 million euros, is the largest subsidized project, since 275 million euros will be provided by grants from the European Union.
The project will be able to operate freight and passenger trains, which will be built with 153 kilometers of double track, signaling and electrification suitable for 200 kilometers. Within the scope of the project, 53 underpasses, 59 overpasses, 16 railway bridges, 2 tunnels, 194 culverts and 3 viaducts will be built.
The project was designed taking into account all environmental measures such as the conservation and reuse of organic soil along the route of the line, the crossing for fauna and the manufacture of acoustic curtains.

The project, which received the 2019 Inspirational Project Award in the field of “financing and financing” at the Eurasian Strategic Infrastructure Project Leadership Forum, will have stations in Çerkezköy, Büyükkarışiran, Lüleburgaz, Babaeski, Edirne and Kapıkule.
