The story of Closed Varosha is still on the agenda. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Maraş, which is in the territory of the TRNC and whose coastline was reopened 46 years later. The closed Varosha, which the public called the ‘Ghost Town’ and closed to civilians since the Cyprus Peace Operation in 1974, resembled scenes from movies. Marash was once a place of luxury cars, expensive homes, the best beaches in the country, and 7-star hotels that were popular with Hollywood stars. Well, why was Varosha closed, which was reopened? IT WAS THE VEGAS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
Marash was known as Las Vegas of the Mediterranean. Before 1974, there were 45 hotels with 10,000 beds and 60 apartment hotels in Varosha. 58 percent of Greek tourism was in this region. There were 3,000 commercial premises, 99 entertainment centers, 143 administrative offices, 4,649 private homes, 21 banks, 24 theaters and cinemas, 380 unfinished buildings and a library with 8,500 books in English, Greek and Turkish. Maras, which has eight kilometers of sandy beach, was known as Las Vegas of the Mediterranean before 1974. The city, which is now called the ‘Ghost City’, was closed to settlements according to the decision made by the Council of UN security after the Cyprus Peace Operation in 1974. It is estimated that approximately 10 billion dollars will be enough for Varosha to return to her former state.
