The İzmir 112 Emergency Call Center manager Tuncay Volkan Bayat explained that although it was the first major disaster experience of his staff, they were trying to help in a calm manner. Bayata said:
“Between the 14.51 and the 15.01 we received 1098 calls. Until 12:00 at night, the sensitivity of our citizens made me cry. They all reported the voice they heard out loud calling 112 anyway. Here, we did the inter-institutional coordination on 112 “.
Noting that the establishment of 112 Emergency Call Centers was a wise decision, Bayat asked society not to occupy 112 unnecessarily, considering those who really need it.
‘It didn’t take more than 80 seconds’
Noting that the time between answering and ending a call during the disaster took no more than 80 seconds, Bayat claimed that the callee’s staff took the necessary information after calming the caller and relayed it to teams in field.
Bayat said that while everyone was leaving the closed areas they were in during the earthquake, the 112 Emergency Call Center staff did not leave their place and continued to provide services.
Noting that there are 60 call consoles in the center, Bayat continued as follows: “At this point, the important thing is to respond quickly and efficiently to calls from citizens. On the day of the earthquake, 60 consoles, including 20 call receivers, 15 toilets, 15 policemen, five gendarmerie and five firefighters, were full and we were ready for service.
