We were talking to him on video when we were at the dentist. It was our biggest chance. He started saying ‘Sister is happening’, we still weren’t convinced. Olcay Maşa (45) and his brother Neslihan Masha (51), who ran out of the Rıza Bey apartment, which collapsed in the earthquake in İzmir, and rescued them at the last minute, recounted the gruesome moments. Olcay Masha, who claimed that they survived by emerging seconds before being under the rubble, claimed that they, along with dentist Arda Hacaroğlu and her assistant, also survived. Olcay Masha, who said that her brother Neslihan Masha was in the dental chair before the earthquake, said: “Before the earthquake started, my sister was in the dental chair. My brother lived in Seferihisar. We were talking to him on video when we were at the dentist. It was our biggest chance. He started saying, ‘Sister is going through an earthquake.’ We are not getting carried away yet. Then we started shaking. We won because we had a 2 second video call. Our dentist and my brother yelled ‘run’. We start to run. Debris spilled onto the stairs. I fell down, my sister grabbed me and picked her up. They opened all the walls and told us. The walls began to fall. I went to the door. When I came back, I didn’t have my sister, then she came out of the dust cloud screaming. We hugged in the corner. The moment we got out, the building collapsed. I thought that all of Izmir was destroyed. We call our children immediately. “I hurt my knee and waist. My sister has abrasions. Because she tried to escape through the rubble.”

Expressing that she was in the dentist’s chair during the earthquake, Neslihan Masha said, “I was in the dentist’s chair. We started shaking while talking to our brother. We started running. I saw my brother fall from the stairs as he came out of the door”. I started looking for my brother. The building was coming towards us. People’s screams never left my ears. I don’t know how I’m going to cope with this commotion. I wish patience for the families of the people inside.
