Anti-government protests reignited in Baghdad, Iraq’s capital, and in southern provinces with a predominantly Shiite population.
Tahrir Square in the capital, which was closed due to protests and reopened to traffic after a year, was closed to traffic again after a crowded group gathered.
Protesters gathered in the square shouting anti-government slogans and crushed posters of Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazimi with their feet.
While the protests in Baghdad ended without incident, clashes broke out between protesters and security forces in the oil-rich city of Basra in the south of the country.
The security forces attempted to disperse the crowd gathered in the al-Jabalia area in the center of the city by shooting into the air and using gas bombs. At least 10 people were injured in the incidents.
In the anti-government protests in the southern cities of Kut and Divaniye, political parties were called for closure and those who committed acts of corruption were punished.
On the other hand, a year after the October 25 protests in Iraq last week, people took to the streets again and 240 people were injured, 200 of them from the security forces. (İHA)
