One of the two buildings that suffered the most in the Izmir earthquake is Emrah Apartment and the other is Rızabey Apartment. They are both in Bayraklı. Apart from being in the same neighborhood, they have another common characteristic. They are reinforced against earthquakes. We learn from residents that the area where the buildings are located was a potato and beet field in the past. According to the residents of the two apartments, Emrah Apartment was reinforced against earthquakes 10 years ago and Rızabey 4 years ago with a major repair. However, these reinforcements were not enough to survive after the earthquake that struck Izmir.

LIVE IN DIDIM

We spent many hours with Selçuk Şamiloğlu in the area where Emrah Apartment is located. As we speak with neighborhood residents, we learn details that make people sore. The name of the contractor who built Emrah Apartment is Hayati Uzun. Hayati Uzun lost her grandson Emrah in the Erzincan earthquake in 1992. After this incident, she was building a 2-block, 28-apartment apartment in 1993 to go to İzmir Bayraklı and keep her name alive. He calls this place ‘Emrah Apartment’. He has been managing this building for years and, according to his neighbors, he later settled in Didim.

Although the contractor Hayati Uzun leaves the Emrah apartment, her son Bora Uzun and her family continue to live. However, the earthquake did not leave Uzun’s family in Izmir. In the earthquake that took place the day before, Hayati Uzun lost his wife Rabia Uzun, his 17-year-old grandson Hayati Uzun and other grandchildren who had the same name in the building he built to keep his grandson alive in the earthquake in Erzincan. His son Bora, who is a contractor like him, is rescued from the rubble as seriously injured and taken to hospital.

Friends of Hayati Uzun, 17, tell us: “We were in the park below. Suddenly we experience an earthquake. When we returned to the street, it was a cloud of dust. We immediately got into the rubble. The first Izmir fire brigade arrived at the building. We took the Izmir firefighters and my two cousins from the ground floor. They were lucky to find a space to live. Then we looked at the top where Hayatiler was. His life was closed to his father, but he lost it. “
