The priest of a Greek Orthodox church in Lyon, eastern France, was shot while closing the church.

Although the priest was seriously injured in the incident, it was announced that the attacker escaped from the scene.

French Interior Minister Gerald Derman declared on Twitter that there was a “serious incident” and asked the public to stay away from the seventh region where the incident occurred.

A police officer told AFP that the attacker had “a short-barreled bomb-action rifle” and fled after the incident.

Speaking to Reuters, French police said the priest was shot twice and his life was still in danger.

Another police officer claimed that the priest is a Greek citizen.

On Thursday, 3 people were killed in a knife attack on a church in the city of Nice, and were detained as injuries in the offensive police operation.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the attack in the city of Nice as “Islamist terror”.
