Johnson & Johnson announced that they stopped the coronavirus vaccination studies after one of their participants had an “unexplained” illness. Johnson & Johnson decided to stop clinical trials for the Covid-19 vaccine candidate just weeks after announcing that the trials were in their final stages.
According to the story on NBC News, the hiatus in vaccine trials is not entirely unexpected. Last month, final clinical trials of the coronavirus vaccine, jointly developed by the University of Oxford and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, were suspended after a subject reacted negatively to the vaccine.
In a company news release Monday night, Johnson & Johnson said clinical trials were stopped in accordance with regulatory standards after one of its participants developed an unexplained illness. It was indicated that the participant’s status was reviewed and evaluated by ENSEMBLE (Independent Data Security Monitoring Board).
“We must respect the privacy of this participant,” the company statement said. “We are also learning more about the disease from this participant, and it is important to have all the facts before sharing additional information.”
It is not yet clear whether the participant received the experimental vaccine or was in the placebo control group.
