Protesting the results of the parliamentary elections held in Kyrgyzstan on Sunday, October 4, protesters occupied the Presidential Palace and the parliament inside.
The 12 party supporters, who according to reports from the Central Election Commission had not exceeded the 7 percent election threshold, held a protest in Ala-Too Square in the capital Bishkek, demanding the cancellation of the election results.
The police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the protesters, who number more than 5,000. The protesters, who pushed the municipal firefighters and the garbage truck against the police with stones and sticks, took the opportunity to withdraw the police and occupied the Presidential Palace and the parliament inside.
More than 100 people are said to have been injured in the incidents so far.
The security forces did not interfere with the protesters.
Protesters in Ala-Too Square are announcing and celebrating through loudspeakers that say “We have taken the Presidential Palace” and “Almazbek Atambayev and Sadır Caparov must be released.”
The former president was expelled from prison
The protesters headed to the prison of the State Committee for National Security, which is located near the Presidential Palace and where former President Almazbek Atambayev was staying.
After the brawl in front of the State Committee for National Security and the entrance doors were broken, the protesters entered the building.
Later, concerned people left Atambayev and handed him over to his followers.
Atambayev, who was pulled out of the crowd and into a car, is expected to address thousands of fans waiting for him in Ala Too Square.
