The use of a mask was made mandatory within the framework of the circular entitled Covid-19 Measures sent by the Ministry of Health to 81 provincial governorates. However, some citizens who do not obey the rule continue to pose a risk, especially in public transport.
Those who resist not wearing masks cause difficulties for both drivers and passengers. After the ban, there is chaos on the minibus routes in Istanbul and arguments between drivers and passengers. The IETT bus drivers, who warned the passengers that they got on the buses without a mask, recounted the events they experienced:
Kicking the bus door
Mehmet Calik: Our busiest hours are the morning and afternoon hours. We have a certain number. There are enough difficulties to exceed the number. Those who knock on the window from outside, those who kick the door, those who speak jargon. These are constantly happening. We are trying to manage. Most people wear the mask in their mouth. They don’t cover their noses. Passengers fight each other too. When the discussion grows, we try to stop the vehicle and intervene. I want to say to the passengers: Put yourself in our place and help us.
THE VEHICLE WEARS THOUSANDS OF ITS MASK
Alper Akgün: The unmasked passengers insist on taking the bus. We approach the stop, we leave the passengers. Trying to get passengers through the middle door. Can’t we see it to be masked or not? Some passengers wear their masks when passing, but take them off. The passenger capacity of these vehicles is safe. When it’s full, we can’t buy it. There are people who want to harass the vehicle.
THERE ARE PASSENGERS WHO MUST DRIVE
Mustafa Erbiçen: You get on using the passenger mask, but the mask is lowered inside the vehicle. They shake when we warn. “What if we don’t wear a mask?”, “You are unnecessarily afraid” There are even those who say. They don’t think about us, themselves, or other travelers. There are even those who beat up our friends. (DHA)
