The IMM Transport Coordination Center (UKOME) meeting was held at Zeytinburnu Çırpıcı Social Facilities under the chairmanship of IMM Secretary General Can Akın Çağlar.
Government representatives, who are a majority in UKOME, opposed the live broadcast of the meeting by IMM because it was contrary to the Officials Act and demanded a vote on the live broadcast.
Çağlar, who chaired the meeting, pointed out that the secretariat of the meetings was in charge of the IMM and highlighted the legal regulation on transparent management and the freedom of citizens to receive information.
Çağlar announced that they would not consider voting on his proposal to broadcast the meeting live, and the meeting was broadcast live.

6 THOUSAND NEW TAXI
The meeting discussed the new taxi license plate proposal of the IMM Public Transport Services Directorate, which was previously sent to the subcommittee. Due to the insufficient number of 17,395 taxis in the offer put to the vote, it was proposed to add 6,000 more first.
The proposal indicated that, according to the study carried out by the ITU, the number of taxis that Istanbul needed was 40 thousand.
COMMERCIAL AND GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES
Representatives of the taxi dealers opposed the proposal, saying: “IMM can handle us, but increasing the number of taxis without improving our current conditions means usurping the dealers’ rights. “We are going through difficult times economically due to the pandemic,” they said.
In his speech, Veli Yurt, vice president of the Istanbul Chamber of Taxi Dealers, noted that taxi drivers are at great risk due to the crown and said that the head of the chamber was also treated at the hospital.
Representatives of merchants stated that 17,395 taxis could not work efficiently and that the taxi driver and the customer could not be served. After allowing the taxi driver and customer to meet with the mobile app, they were asked to perform a supply and demand analysis and determine if a new taxi was needed.
Representatives of the House of Minibuses declared that there were 6 thousand minibuses in Istanbul and 3 thousand were inoperable due to the pandemic and suggested that the plates of the minibuses become taxi plates.
The members representing the government also argued that the ITU report included in the proposal did not belong to the university and that it was previously prepared by the IMM. In addition, a workshop on this topic was recommended.
“A PUBLIC OPERATED TAXI SYSTEM”
In response to criticism, IMM Undersecretary General Orhan Demir stated that the same figure emerged as a necessity in the previous study conducted by IMM in 2016.
Noting that UKOME will only determine the number of new taxis and how the system will operate, to be decided by the IMM Assembly or the committee, Demir said: “Taxi plates will remain in the hands of the public.
It will not be sold to individuals and the provision of rental will be prevented. “The goal is to improve quality by introducing a public taxi system.” The proposal was transferred back to the subcommittee after discussions.
