The opposition called a protest in the streets, claiming the elections were rigged, after Aleksandr Lukashenko, who has ruled the country for 26 years without interruption, won the presidential elections held in Belarus on August 9.
When thousands of people took to the streets, clashes broke out in Belarus almost every day. Lukashenko, supported by Russia, declared that he would not leave the seat maintaining his stance against the opposition of the country and Western countries.
In the country where the tension still continues, as Lukashenko took his certificate taking the oath today, members of the opposition demonstrated outside.
The swearing-in ceremony, which took place today in the country where the Belarusian Ministry of the Interior has taken security measures since last night, was completed in a closed room and taking intensive security measures.
OPPOSITION ANNOUNCES “CIVIL DISPUTE”
With Lukashenko taking the oath, the opposition leaders in Belarus made a new declaration and declared “civil disobedience” across the country.
Following the opposition statement, thousands of people gathered in the parks of the Hero City region in the capital Minsk and organized demonstrations against Lukashenko.
While some groups wanted to march towards the Independence Palace, where the swearing-in ceremony took place, armored and masked policemen surrounded the protesters.
MANY PROTESTORS HAVE BEEN DETENTED
Towards night, when tension increased, the police first intervened with the protesters with tear gas and water cannons, then detained many people.
Information was transmitted from the social media accounts of opposition groups that some of the protesters were injured. Although small cross demonstrations in the country continued, some people dispersed after the interventions.
While the Belarusian Interior Ministry announced that arrests and interventions continue at intervals, it has not provided any information on the number of arrests so far. (İHA)
