Hürriyet newspaper columnist Abdulkadir Selvi published today: “Did Demirtaş and Akşener prepare the breakfast table?” In his article titled, Meral Akşener, who was re-elected as leader of the IYI Party, analyzed the congress speech. The relevant part of Selvi’s article is the following:
İYİ Party held a congress that paid attention to coronavirus measures. Meral Akşener was unanimously re-elected president. But a failure in the party made itself felt again. It is useful to evaluate the IYI Party congress in terms of Meral Akşener’s new initiative and the “struggle for power” in the party.
THE DOOR HAPPENED
The message of the İYİ Party Chairman Meral Akşener towards the Kurds and Zazas in the congress speech was remarkable. Akşener also sent a sign to the Alevis in the same sentence. However, the section on Kurds and Zazas came to the fore as the process that began with the breakfast of former HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş.
Demirtaş said: “For example, if I were outside, I would knock on the door of Meral Hanım with Başak one morning and say ‘We came for breakfast.’ Meral Akşener’s response, who had previously said, “We are positioning the HDP as an extension of the PKK right next door,” was curious.
Akşener did not refuse her order for breakfast. He opened the door with the words “There is such a tradition in the southeast, even if you have a blood defendant, you will let him in when he knocks on your door.”
Emphasis on Kurdish and Zaza
Akşener sent warm messages to Kurdish and Zaza voters with the message “The Kurds, who are the original sons of this country, founded the İYİ party, which were clenched between two fists, and Zazas founded the İYİ party” in congress. Akşener’in names of these words close to ‘exercise like Turkey, we say a bütünüz’d but there is also another side of the coin.
When we evaluate Akşener’s emphasis on Kurdish and Zaza among all these words in light of the political conjuncture, we see that the two legs of the breakfast table are being established.
On the one hand, Akşener sends warm messages to the Kurdish voters, on the other hand, he prepares the voters of the İYİ Party with strong nationalist and nationalist reflexes, and on the other hand, he designs his party according to the “national alliance”.
KILIÇDAROĞLU FIRST, THEN AKŞENER
The CHP and IYI Party congresses were held two months apart. Kılıçdaroğlu, who designed the CHP in accordance with the “national alliance”, left his mark at the convention and said: “We will be in power with our friends.” Kılıçdaroğlu, who faced great resistance in the party to nominate Abdullah Gül as joint presidential candidate, shaped the CHP according to his “friends” at the convention.
Akşener, who brought nationalist rhetoric to the forefront during the founding process of the İYİ Party and sometimes winked at the center right, shaped the İYİ Party according to the “national alliance” of this convention. Akşener, with an emphasis on Kurdish and Zaza, prepared the İYİ Party administration, which made a statement saying: “If there is a HDP in the Nation alliance, we do not exist.”
OPENING 2023
In this congress, the cadres that will lead the İYİ Party to the 2023 elections were determined. However, not only cadres but also speeches emerged. Akşener moved the İYİ Party from being a party with a dominant nationalist tone to an open line to the Kurdish issue and the demands of the Zazas. Of course, will this speech remain only in the congress hall or will it manifest itself in Akşener’s speeches and İYİ Party policies? It is a point that we must watch carefully in the coming days.
It means GOOD party, it means Meral Akşener. For this reason, in light of Akşener’s messages, the IYI Party positioned its place in the new process within the national alliance and not closed to the CHP and HDP.
