Due to scandals over the royal family in Spain, discussions arose about the form of government. Pablo Iglesias, leader and deputy prime minister of the United We Can party, a junior partner of the Spanish coalition government, announced his party’s new roadmap. Iglesias, criticizing the country’s regime, argued that Spain should no longer be ruled by a republic rather than a monarchy. Stating that they can establish a new republic, Iglesias explained that this task is his own party. Although the deputy prime minister stressed that advancing Spanish democracy towards a republican horizon was the main task of his party, he asked the royal family to understand the crisis it is going through.
Iglesias argued that Spain had the courage to put a republican regime on the table. After stating that the monarchy no longer represents the most dynamic business sectors and new business opportunities, the Deputy Prime Minister said: “Spain should have a more federal confederal state model based on pluralism and diversity. This is the scenario to overcome the crisis that Spain is experiencing ”. “Less and less people in Spain, especially young people, in the 21st century believe that they cannot decide who should be the president. They believe that they do not have to respond to justice like any other citizen, ”he said.
Referring to the former King Juan Carlos corruption scandal that broke out last month, the deputy prime minister said Carlos left Spain and settled in the United Arab Emirates. Stating that his party does not have a sufficient parliamentary majority to support constitutional reform, Iglesias said: “Things can change in politics. Our strength shows that everything can change. “Goals that seem impossible sometimes become real faster than they seem,” he said.
