Hans Kluge, regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO), said that the rapid increase in coronavirus cases in Europe is a “wake-up call”, saying that in more than half of the countries of the European Union , the number of daily cases has doubled in the last two weeks.
Speaking in Copenhagen, Kluge stated that more than 300,000 new cases were detected in Europe last week, more than the March figures, according to the Turkish BBC report.
Highlights of Kluge’s speech
“Although more cases are being detected now that more tests are being done, it also reveals the situation that alarmed us that the epidemic is spreading rapidly in the region.
“Although the figures were higher than in March, the figures for hospitalizations, serious cases and deaths were not as high as at that time. But in France and Spain, these figures are also increasing.”
“Although it has been observed to be spreading among the young population with milder symptoms for now, if measures are not taken, the possibility of the virus spreading to the elderly and health problems increases.
“According to the WHO, more than 5 million cases have been seen in Europe since the beginning of the epidemic. More than 228 thousand people died.”
