Hamza İpek lived with his family in the Kırıkhan district of Hatay. Hamza’s father was struggling to educate his four children by working as a day laborer. Hamza was also studying at the Anatolian Vocational and Technical High School Zübeyde Hanım in the district. Due to his great stature, Hamza’s dreams were to be a basketball player. He was preparing to attend the basketball tryout. However, on December 9, 2015, he was called into the school principal’s room, claiming that he had kissed his friend from DH High School. Hamza is now a teenager in his 20s and had to spend the last 5 years in a wheelchair.

Stating that his only wish is to walk, İpek told Hürriyet: “I need a stem cell transplant to be able to walk. It was said that more than one surgery had to be performed. A lot of money is requested for my treatment. My family is poor and cannot afford it. We went to some private hospitals, but they tried us. The doctor did not even report the fee for the treatment, knowing that we could not afford it. Since I have been sleeping for a long time, my body started getting bedsores. I want to be treated. I am a member of a poor family. I am used to the difficulties of life. The amount of compensation awarded by the court does not concern me. Even though they trip the world under my feet, I don’t see it. I just want to walk. I have a 5 TL shoe on my feet, but keep my feet on the ground and I can walk. “

Mother Rüştiye İpek, on the other hand, said that she wanted her son to be treated and said: “This amount of compensation would be fine if they didn’t give it to me. To be used directly for the treatment of my son. My son needs to be treated in a full hospital. I am waiting for help from the authorities. Even the wheelchair my son used was provided by an acquaintance. No money will restore my child’s health. My wish is for my son to stand up. Hamza doesn’t feel under his chest. You can use your arms. You have had bedsores for 5 years. There are wounds that never heal. My son was driven to suicide, his pride was broken. By then, he had just turned 15. At that age, he saw death as a remedy. Even one day his teachers didn’t come and said get better soon. My son’s life is gone, we are in ruins. We were devastated, very alone. “
