Başak Demirtaş, the wife of former HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş, who has been detained in Edirne F-type prison, announced that she has resigned from her teaching position.
Demirtaş said that the uncertainty that arose in the prison’s hearing schedule became difficult with the conditions of the pandemic and that this uncertainty carries the risk of victimizing students.
“IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT DECISIONS I HAVE EVER MADE IN MY LIFE”
Stating that his resignation was a family decision made with his wife and daughters, Başak Demirtaş said:
* Let me explain to you on your occasion; I resigned from the Ministry of Education about 15 days ago. It was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made in my life. I made this decision very sadly, but I had to do it a bit.
* As you know, Selahattin has been detained for about 4 years and is still being held hostage in a prison 1700 km from us. And if you are a teacher and you are serving in a public space, you can encounter all kinds of difficulties.
* For example, I was on my way to Edirne on a weekday. Sometimes it was winter and the winter conditions became more difficult. My trips lasted two days and three days due to bad weather and flight schedule.
* Of course, I have been able to carry out this process without making my students suffer. However, due to this epidemic, conditions became increasingly difficult.
“MY TEACHING WILL CONTINUE ALL LIFE”
Stating that he will not be productive for his students due to the pandemic and prison visits, Demirtaş said:
* I also had a concern as follows; So will I be productive enough under these conditions for my students from now on? I asked myself this question. I could not say yes with peace of mind. So I decided to quit.
But I think that when it comes to teaching, teaching is a very broad and sublime profession that cannot fit the stereotypes of a public profession limited by laws and prohibitions.
* Therefore, whether you are retired or leaving public service, you can never stop teaching. Because teaching is not just a profession, I think it is a way of life. Of course, my teaching will last a lifetime.
