UNSC decision on arms embargo and withdrawal of mercenaries in Libya

The UN Security Council has decided to extend the mandate of the UN Support Mission (UNSMIL) in Libya until September 15, 2021.

In line with the US objection and request, the council decided to divide the mission of the UN Support Mission to Libya in two and appoint a special representative to carry out the political process and international negotiations and a separate coordinator to carry out the daily activities of UNSMIL, and also called for a ceasefire in Libya.

According to AA news; In the decision that Russia and China abstained, all UN member countries were asked to comply with the arms embargo on Libya and to withdraw foreign mercenaries from the country.

On the other hand, according to information obtained from diplomatic sources, the name of the Bulgarian diplomat, Special Coordinator of the UN Peace Process in the Middle East, Nickolay Mladenov, is among those who are considered to be appointed for this position, which has been vacant. for about 6 months after the resignation of former UN Special Representative in Libya Ghassan Selame.

Former Ghanaian Foreign Minister Hanna Serwaa Tetteh is claimed to still be at the table for this position.

Following the resignation of former Lebanese representative Selame from his post in June 2017 for “health reasons” in March 2020, the UN has not determined the name to carry out Lebanese diplomacy.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is expected to appoint someone to the post shortly.

Libya is experiencing a legitimacy crisis due to the civil war that has been raging since the assassination of the ousted leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Conflicts are taking place between internationally renowned Libyan government troops and Khalifa Haftar, the leader of the illegitimate armed forces in the east of the country.
