High architect Mehmet Emin Yılmaz, who followed in the footsteps of Turkish architectural works on the island of Limni, which was ruled by the Ottoman state in 1456 during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, said that the Ottoman works on the island were quickly destroyed . Yılmaz said that the island’s population was 27,000 in 1894, that the Turks comprised 2,500 of this population, and that there were 6 mosques and 164 Greek churches on the island at that time.
Yılmaz gave the following information about the Turkish artifacts on the island and their situation: There are approximately 130 Turkish artifacts that I was able to detect in the center of Limni Island and in the villages. The most important of these works is undoubtedly the tomb of Niyazi Mısri. Actually, this tomb is also the center of the Turkish settlement on the island. Niyazi Mısri mosque, namazgah, monotherance, madrasa, timing house, çilehane, fountain and burial place are located around the grave. In other words, it becomes a complex with the buildings added over time. Finally, II. Abdulhamid Han is repairing the Mısri Tekke. Most of these structures have not survived. “
Yılmaz said that Sufis Niyazi Mısri spent 15 years in exile on the island of Limni and that after Mısri’s death, he was buried in the cemetery next to the mosque and a grave was built on it.
Stating that among the destroyed or destroyed Turkish artifacts on the island is the Mısri mausoleum, Yılmaz continued as follows:
Niyazi Mısri’s tomb was demolished and an apartment was built on it. Tombstones in the treasury were smashed and used in the construction of the surrounding garden walls. If you look closely at the stairs leading to the castle today, you will see that some tombstones are used as paving stones. The mosque next to the tomb was also demolished and a cafe was built in its place. Today, there is a cafe in the mosque. II. The courtyard gate of the Mısri Dervish Lodge built by Abdülhamid Han became a market by building around it. The unification is also used as a warehouse for the same market.
THEY MADE THE MOSQUE TO CINEMA
Yılmaz also explained how the Hacı Hasan Ağa mosque was destroyed as follows: after Limni was lost, the mosque was taken over by the Greek state and then its minaret is demolished and turned into a movie theater. On the night of September 9, 1939, during the first screening of the film, a fire broke out due to movie machines, 63 people died. After this event, the mosque was completely demolished and a church was built in its place.
