Erol Mütercimler, a member of the faculty of the University of Haliç, referring to the members of the imam hatip in a television program in which he participated the day before, said: “But look at the result, those who graduated from that imam hatip are be; perverted, dishonest, immoral … ”, he said. These words of Mütercimler provoked a great reaction. While RTÜK was launching an investigation, the ÖNDER Imam Hatipli Association announced that they would initiate a legal process.
According to the news in the Hürriyet newspaper, Erol Mütercimler claimed that his words were misinterpreted and made the following statement:
“After an alleged cult leader sexually abused a child, we were talking about what to do to prevent similar incidents from happening again. Meanwhile, I expressed a misperception about the imam hatip that emerged somewhere in society. What I really said there was how wrong a perception was and that this perception was not erased. In other words, when such perverts appeared, a segment of society suddenly identified with the imam hatip. Those at the table know in what sense this is said. But it was not like that for the audience. Unfortunately, the work has become an insult to scholars of Imam Hatip. In fact, what I’m saying is that this perception is a mistake caused by these perverts. In other words, it is not an insult to imam hatip people, on the contrary, an injustice has arisen because of them.
‘I SUPPORTED THESE SCHOOLS’
I will voice this and apologize on our own show tonight. I apologize for a misunderstanding. More precisely, I will apologize for being upset by a large number of my prayers. Because I am a teacher, the best thing for me is to apologize. I had hundreds of imam hatip graduates. Imam Hatip schools are a project of the Republic. As a Republic teacher, I have always supported these schools. “
