On September 4, 16 hazelnut workers who were attacked in Sakarya went to the Mazıdağı Gendarmerie Command in Mardin, where they returned, and lodged a complaint. Hazelnut workers testified in the presence of nine lawyers from the Diyarbakır and Mardin bar associations.
The president of the Mardin Bar Association, İsmail Elik, stated that the workers’ statements were taken as “victims” in the command of the gendarmerie, “The Mazıdağı Prosecutor’s Office wanted to take the statements of the 13 remaining citizens, except three, as “witnesses.” This is against the law. At the objection of our attorneys, they were all referred to as victims and their statements were completed. ”Elik gave the following information about the incident:
* Our villagers who went from Mazıdağı to Sakarya to collect hazelnuts were attacked on September 4. They were insulted by the owners of the field while working in the fields. When they said that they would report him to the gendarmerie, they were told ‘This is not Mardin’ and were beaten by being exposed to severe insults and curses. Unfortunately, these types of racist attacks have become quite common lately. This is due to a longstanding policy of impunity.
THE GOVERNOR’S DECLARATION DOES NOT BORDER WITH THE FACTS
* The perpetrators of these attacks believe that they will be protected. This is really what happens in practice. Unfortunately, incidents are increasing day by day as attempts are made to cover up the facts without any investigation. The declaration of the Sakarya governorate has nothing to do with reality. The event is exactly as reflected on social media. As the Mardin Bar Association, we will follow this process.
Şilan Demir and Baran Demir, who were abused workers, explained the details of the attack on Ferit Aslan from Medyascope:
They said they would burn and kill
Şilan Demir: We went to the field in the morning. The owner of the field cursed us. We returned home, saying that we would not accept this insult. Later, the owner of the land and his relatives attacked you with sticks in hand. One of them had an ax in his hand. They said they would burn us and kill us. They beat me while they intervened to make sure nothing happened to my father and cousin, and when I fell, they beat me.
THEY SUPPORTED DAYIM’S DAUGHTER
Baran Demir: We put down the cans and went home. Three children came to the place where we work. First they argued, then they attacked us. They threatened us with death and started beating us with sticks. Someone was holding an ax. There were also women and children among us. They beat up my uncle’s daughter. We want justice. We want those who attack us to be punished. We returned immediately without even having a chance to complain that we would be killed there.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Turkey’s agenda through social media ‘Nuts racist attacks on workers’ said that the investigation conducted after the events reflected in two separate attacks occurred in the Kocaeli district appeared for two separate quarters of workers in the nuts. The first attack took place in the Selahiye district on August 22 and the second in the Köyyeri district of the same district on September 4. In the first attack, it was claimed that the garden shareholders were fighting and the hazelnut workers in the garden were also injured. In the second incident, an attack was carried out against workers who opposed the abuse. While some workers were mistreated, the images taken during the incident were reflected on social networks and provoked reactions.
