VACCINATION STUDIES IN CHINA

In China, where Covid-19 appeared, clinical trials of 8 candidate vaccines continue. 4 of these are tested in humans in the first, 4 in the second and third stages.

Public pharmaceutical companies such as CanSino, Sinopharm and Sinovac carry out vaccination studies in cooperation with institutions such as the Chinese Military Medical Academy, the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the Beijing Institute of Biological Products.

Aside from the CanSino vaccine candidate, the vaccine candidates developed by Sinopharm with the Vuhan Institute of Virology and the Beijing Institute of Biological Products and the “CoronaVac” developed by SinoVac are among the most promising studies.

CLINICAL TRIALS ARE PERFORMED IN 3 STAGES

For a vaccine to be widely used, it must be tested in humans in 3 stages.

In the first phase of clinical trials, the vaccine’s safety and possible side effects are being investigated in a small number of healthy volunteers. In the second stage, the effectiveness of the vaccine, whose reliability has been confirmed, is tested in more than 100 subjects. In the third and last stage the same process is repeated with thousands of subjects. This whole process can take months or even years.

33 VACCINE CANDIDATES IN CLINICAL TRIAL

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), as of August 28, 33 candidate vaccines against Covid-19 are in clinical trials and 143 candidate vaccines are in the preclinical evaluation stage.
