At its July meeting, the Supreme Council of Radio and Television (RTÜK) sentenced Halk TV and TELE 1 to a screen blackout for five days by majority vote. The penalty for TELE 1 was imposed for criticism of the Directorate of Religious Affairs.
When the court accepted RTÜK’s appeal to stay of execution, a five-day penalty was imposed for the screen lock. The ban, which began at 00:00 hours yesterday, will continue until Monday. If a penalty is applied to TELE1 once again, RTÜK will cancel the channel’s license.
THERE IS A GENERAL OPERATION FOR THE MEDIA
Speaking on the live broadcast minutes before TELE1 was turned off, the channel editor-in-chief Merdan Yanardağ said:
* There is a very fundamental attack on the freedom of the press and expression guaranteed by the Constitution. RTÜK has agreements with the EU. Under these agreements, it is said that the decision to dim the screen will not be made. There is no way to explain why TELE 1 was shut down. Obviously, there is a widespread operation against the media.
* They are trying to reorganize the media environment. AKP is losing power. Now there is a dissolution of power. As this dissolution process deepens, it is understood that the AKP has embarked on a more repressive and totalitarian quest, and is trying to suppress different tendencies in society and voices of opposition. The attack on TELE 1 specific to TELE1 should not be considered.

CHP Vice President Ali Öztunç, formerly a member of RTÜK, evaluated the decision on the TELE 1 live broadcast as follows:

PENALTY NOT CONFINED IMPLEMENTED
TELE 1’s main presenter Murat Taylan explained the decision as follows: RTÜK imposes a penalty, the decision is not finalized in court. He then gives a second punishment showing his punishment as a precedent. The screen goes dark for five days due to two penalties. The first penalty is not finished, the second penalty is not finished, but the screen blackout is quickly applied on two penalties. The logic of “first pay the fine and then hand it over to the court” applies.
