HTML4 definition of the ‘rel’ attribute. Here are some additional values, each of which can be used or omitted in any combination (unless otherwise noted, and except where prohibited by law) and their meanings. symmetry, transitivity and reverse If any. See the XFN home page for more information on XFN.
friendship (choose at most one)
- Contact
- Someone who knows how to contact. Often symmetrical.
- known
- Someone you’ve exchanged greetings with and not much else (if any), maybe a short conversation or two. Often symmetrical.
- friend
- Someone who you are friends with. A compatriot, friend, home (boy | girl) that you know. Often symmetrical.
physical
- met
- Someone you have met in person. Symmetrical.
professional
- coworker
- Someone with whom a person works or works in the same organization as. Symmetrical. Generally transitive.
- colleague
- Someone in the same field of study / activity. Symmetrical. Often transitive.
geographic (choose at most one)
- co-resident
- Someone with whom you share a postal address. Symmetric and transitive.
- neighbour
- Someone who lives nearby, perhaps just on an adjacent street or door. Symmetrical. Often transitive.
family (choose at most one)
- boy
- The genetic offspring of a person, or someone that a person has adopted and cares for. Reverse is father.
- father
- Inverse as a child.
- brother
- Someone with whom a person shares a father. Symmetrical. Generally transitive.
- wife
- Someone you are married to. Symmetrical. Not transitive.
- relationship
- A relative, someone you consider part of your extended family. Symmetric and typically transitive.
Romantic
- muse
- Someone to bring you inspiration. Not reverse.
- Special person
- Someone with whom you are in love. Not reverse.
- date
- Someone you are dating. Symmetrical. Not transitive.
- boyfriend
- Someone with whom you are intimate and at least somewhat committed, typically exclusively. Symmetrical. Not transitive.
identity
- me
- A link to yourself at a different URL. Unique to all other XFN values. Symmetric required. There is an implicit “I” relationship between the contents of a directory and the directory itself.
