There was a surprise update in the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) applied to automobiles.

While the long-awaited tax base values in the sector were reconsidered, it should be noted that the 60 percent tax bracket was now 80 percent and SCT rates were increased for cars with high-volume engines.

Consequently, the most preferred group of cars in Turkey with an engine capacity not exceeding 1.6-liter models, exceeding the tax rates of TL 130 thousand will no longer be subject to excise duty by 80 percent.

To express the resulting table with figures, the old price of the car with a 1.6-liter engine volume below a tax-free price of 131 thousand TL will be 246 thousand TL, while the new price will be 278 thousand TL. This points to a 13 percent price increase on the model in question.

Habertürk Tax Writer Rahim Ak explained in detail what we have counted so far with yesterday’s news.

However, to understand the changes in the SCT, it is useful to look at the most recent situation in the five best-selling car prices in Turkey.

DISCOUNT ON AEGEA AND CLIO

The price of the Fiat Egea 95 hp Urban Plus 1.4 Fire model in August was announced at 125,900 TL. This vehicle, which entered the 50 percent segment according to the previous SCT bases, fell in the 45 percent segment with the base value increase from 70 thousand TL to 85 thousand TL in cars below 1.6 liters. Thus, the price of the Egea version in question will be reduced to 121 thousand 703 TL by making 4 thousand TL cheaper.

Another of Renault Clio’s cars sold in Turkey, it was one of the base models that the price advantage that has been achieved with the update. The price of the 100hp Joy 1.0 TCe X-Tronic version of Clio in August was announced at the beginning of the month at 149,800 TL. Since the tax-free price of this car, which entered the 50 percent SCT zone until Sunday, is around 84,600 TL, the version of Clio has changed to the 45 percent SCT segment according to the new regulation. The new price of Clio, whose tax bracket was lowered, was 144 thousand 750 TL.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE MEGANE SEDAN IS AT THE TOP

Turkey in the period from January to July the third most preferred model is the Renault Megane Sedan, Clio was exposed to price increases in contrast to the modifications to the excise duty. The 115hp Icon 1.5 Blue dCi EDC version of the Megane Sedan was in the 60 percent segment under the old tax regulations with a price tag of TL 261,500 in August.

However, the fact that the tax-free price of the version in question exceeds 130 thousand TL, puts the car in the tax bracket of 80 percent. Therefore, it turns out that the new price of the Megane Sedan will increase to 295 thousand 440 TL with the change of SCT.

THE INITIAL PRICE OF THE PASSAT INCREASED 41 THOUSAND TL

Excise duty change exposed to price increases along with another of Turkey’s best-selling models in the Volkswagen Passat. The 1.5 TSI ACT 150 PS DSG Impression, the entry version of the Passat, had a retail price of TL 319,200 in August.

This car, which was in the 60 percent tax bracket before August 30, will now be subject to the 80 percent tax with the change in the SCT. With the change, the new price of the cheapest Passat will be 360 thousand 628 TL.

COROLLA NACIONAL EXCEEDED 300 THOUSAND TL

Let’s keep looking at the effects of the new SCT through the Toyota Corolla, the fifth best-selling model in the first 7 months of the year. Corolla’s e-CVT Hybrid Passion X-Pack version was sold at dealerships for TL 275,850 in August. This car also entered the 80 percent portion with its tax-free price exceeding 130 thousand TL. Thus, the national production price of the Corolla for the first time exceeded the level of 300 thousand TL and rose to 311 thousand 650 TL.

As a result, while the tax base rates in SCT are updated as expected by the industry, it can be said that the increase in the tax rate from 60 to 80 percent in some models reflects an increase in prices for consumers in many models. While it was observed that the prices of the premium packages of C-segment sedans in domestic cars increased, the prices of models such as D-segment and SUVs in imported cars increased due to the SCT change.
