The Istanbul Bar Association made a statement regarding the posting of the poster of the lawyer Ebru Timtik, a member of the bar association, who died fasting.
Members of the AKP, especially Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu, attacked the posting of Timtik’s poster on the building. The Istanbul Bar Association was also targeted by social media and media close to the AKP.
In the statement that said “It is understood that a specific perception operation has been designed for the Istanbul Bar Association”, it was said that the poster was not hung with the decision of the bar.
The statement also used the statements about the accusations, “There is no accusation against lawyer Ebru Timtik in the terrorist act related to the martyrdom of prosecutor M. Selim Kiraz. There is no such determination in the decision that has not yet been finalized.”

“It is understood that, on the occasion of the commemoration of the lawyer Ebru Timtik, whom we lost yesterday in a quick death, a perception operation was designed specifically for the Istanbul Bar Association.
It is noteworthy that the Minister of the Interior also participated in this debate with unrealistic expressions, which has been discussed in recent months and is expected to bring “special benefit” to the enactment of multiple bar associations.
As Istanbul Bar Association, we consider as a requirement of the attitude that we have maintained so far, to remind the following articles both to the Minister of the Interior personally, as well as to some press organs and operational trolls:
1. During the commemoration held yesterday in front of the Istanbul Bar Association, Att. The Ebru Timtik poster was not hung by the bar. The poster was hung in the deputy principal’s room “despite the law school officials.”
2. Contrary to what the Minister of the Interior said, this poster was not downloaded by the security forces but by the officials of the Bar Association. The security forces are witnesses to this.
3. The Istanbul Bar Association has raised the Turkish flag on the building as a sign of their attitude on this point.
4. Av. The court decision of Ebru Timtik is not finalized. The most fundamental principle that determines our position as a legal institution is the “presumption of innocence”, which is one of the generally accepted norms of universal law. In addition, what is tried to explain are the violations in that trial and the incorrectness of the decision. In this context, the mention of a terrorist member or the defense of terrorism is part of the organized perception operation.
5. In the terrorist act related to the martyrdom of the prosecutor M. Selim Kiraz, Atty. There is no claim against Ebru Timtik. There is no such determination in the decision that has not yet been finalized.
6. The action that martyred Mr. Selim Kiraz is a terrorist act that has been most harshly cursed by the Istanbul Bar Association. Our Bar Association, which today has the same understanding, commemorates our Prosecutor every year and emphasizes the importance he places on keeping his name alive every year.
7. Av. The value that we defend for Ebru Timtik is the “principle of fair trial”. All lawyers know that the judicial system of our country is going through a serious problem in this area. As the Istanbul Bar Association, we cannot be expected to stay out of these discussions.
8. Being in this debate cannot mean the sanctification of the act of “fasting death”. The Istanbul Bar Association, which had openly declared its attitude during such events earlier, is at the same point today. The death fast is not an act to be repaired. It cannot be expected that an institution that mainly defends the right to life can be found at another time.
9. The important question here is whether it addresses the problem we are experiencing with a “human rights approach”. From the beginning, an effective effort has been made to quickly put an end to the acts of the dead lawyers. The primary focus in the focus of these efforts has been “preventing death” and alone. For the last time, on 08.18.2020, together with 9 presidents of Illustrious Bar Associations who visited the hospitals and explained their concern about the problem, “this visible future” was pointed out and alerted at a press conference. Unfortunately, these alerts did not meet the expected response.
Istanbul Bar Association; It is a legal institution that “clearly” shows its line with its official site and the articles, posters, advertisements, statements and meetings in all the media that it owns. Although all the resources that will bring history to those who want to know this line are open, the doubts that are being created about that line are now an operation of perception. Those who think that such a perception operation will be beneficial will find themselves in front of lawyers, since the legal conscience has not followed a proper development process.
The Istanbul Bar Association will continue its struggle with the same conscience, knowing that the democratic, secular, social rule of law was born from the Atatürk revolutions and with the aim of living and keeping alive the values of this Republic.
