Today is the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Schuman Declaration that gives life to the idea of the European Union. Since 1999, when our candidate status for the European Union has been registered, we have been celebrating ‘May 9 Europe Day’ in our country, together with all Europeans.

The ideas behind the Schuman Declaration allowed Europe to rise from the ashes after a war that devastated the entire world, bringing together the differences and hostilities of countries for peace, security, development and prosperity. Today, we again face a devastating disaster. This time, our common enemy is a virus that knows no limits and threatens not only our health but also our well-being, social order and humanitarian ties. This invisible little enemy once again reminded us of the meaning of ‘unity’, of being strong in unity, in which we have recently faced the danger of forgetting, we are ready to sacrifice populist policies and short-term national interests.
“THE STRONG EUROPEAN UNION OF THIS CRISIS”
It should not be forgotten that every disaster brings opportunities. I believe that with the steps taken by the European Union correctly and on time, this crisis will also be strengthened. I fully believe that when discrimination and hate speech are put aside, the common interest of our Europe will not be sacrificed for small political games or national interests, it will be better days when it is inclusive and fair. There are difficult days when we will focus on fighting the epidemic, economic recovery in the post-epidemic period, driving regional developments affecting our continent, and efforts to combat terrorism, migration, and terrorism.
“THE EU MUST UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE IN THE SAME BOAT”
On these difficult days, Turkey – We must seize the opportunities to offer in the way of reviving EU relations. I hope that the EU, which until now has adopted discriminatory and exclusive attitudes towards our country, now understands that we are all in the same boat.
