In a statement made by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FOA), it was noted that despite Kovid-19, pesticide efforts against desert grasshopper invasion continued in the countries of the region.

In the statement, it has been noted that 240,000 hectares of area have been sprayed and 750 people have been trained in control operations so far, and that the situation in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia is at an alarming level.

The statement indicated that if control studies are not accelerated, desert grasshopper herds may be 20 times larger than before in this rainy season, and it is emphasized that the situation will become dire for millions of East Africans who are already are food deficient.

The statement says Yemen and Iran, facing the devastating effects of the civil war, are also under threat. Herds of grasshoppers, which have damaged fields in East Africa and countries in the Middle East for months, can cover 150 kilometers every day.

The 40-80 million grasshoppers in a square kilometer can consume enough food for 35,000 people in just one day.
