Great negligence occurred after the death of 9 patients in the fire that broke out as a result of the explosion of the oxygen tube in the Covid-19 intensive care unit of the SANKO Gaziantep University Hospital.
Many hospitals reported that low-quality oxygen therapy devices, which are widely used in treating Covid patients, set fires, but use of the devices continued.
The Ministry of Health also sent a letter to all hospitals the day before the explosion in Gaziantep, notifying that these devices started fires and demanding that education focus on fire prevention. The experts, who informed SÖZCÜ, stated that the companies that imported the devices with quality problems and the officials of the Ministry of Health who bought these devices should be investigated to send them to all hospitals.
EXPLOSION IF CONNECTED TO TUBE
According to information provided by specialist doctors, patients whose need for oxygen has increased due to Covid-19 receive oxygen regularly in hospitals. The Health Ministry sent devices that increase the flow of oxygen to patients to hospitals. As the devices were widely used, hospitals required additional oxygen and power due to overload. Thanks to these devices, patients felt more oxygen. However, the devices began to cause frequent burns and fires due to the high current. These fires were mostly put out without damaging the environment.
THE FIRE HAS BEFORE
That is why a fire broke out in a private hospital in Istanbul in July. When the central oxygen systems at the bedside of patients were not sufficient for the high flow of oxygen, this time large oxygen tubes were brought into intensive care rooms. Experts claimed that these tubes, which carry the risk of explosion in case of exposure to a small spark or electrical contact, are kept at the bedside of patients and almost invited to possible disasters, they said the dreaded disaster arose with the explosion in Gaziantep. The experts claimed that the explosion occurred due to the direct connection of the device, which should normally be connected to the central oxygen plug, to the tube, and this was entirely due to lack of training, and called for the urgent removal of the tubes in all patient rooms.
HERE IS THE LETTER FROM THE LATE MINISTRY
It turned out that the Health Ministry sent a letter to hospitals just one day before the explosion that killed 9 patients waiting to be discharged in Gaziantep and pointed out the risk of fire in this article. In the letter sent by the General Directorate of Public Hospitals with the title ‘Safe use of medical devices’, it was noted that notifications were received that the oxygen devices were burned.
