Donald Trump plans to travel to Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday to attend in person as delegates to the Republican National Convention re-nominate him for U.S. presidency.
Charlotte was chosen two years ago as the site where Republicans would officially begin Trump’s bid for re-election, solely for the coronavirus pandemic to throw such plans into disarray. An attempt to move a standard convention format to Jacksonville, Florida, was thwarted when the virus broke out.
Trump will, however told make an appearance in Charlotte on Monday, with Republicans deciding to hide elements of a personal convention.
This Democratic National Convention, originally planned for Milwaukee, Wisconsin, consisted of remotely filmed segments, with no jubilant audience of delegates. Most observers consider it a success.
Details for the Republican convention remain vague, though Trump is set to whistle on covenant by delivering his acceptance speech from the White House, traditionally a place free of party politics, on Thursday.
Events in the capital will be central to the Andrew W Mellon Auditorium, which will have a reduced capacity due to concerns about social distance. The location is close to Trump’s Washington hotel, which is expected to act as a social hub, netting income for the family business. A fireworks display at the National Mall is also planned.
