Trump offers to help New York, Chicago with increased shooting

President Trump said Sunday that the federal government was “ready, willing and able” to intervene in the face of increased shootings in New York City and Chicago.

The president, in a tweet, pointed to the armed violence that erupted on July 4 of the weekend in both cities, with nearly 40 people injured in the Big Apple and 72 in the Windy City, including 13 who died.

“The crime numbers for Chicago and New York are way above,” he wrote. “Federal government ready, willing and able to help, if asked!”

In New York, between midnight Saturday and 6:30 a.m. Sunday, 39 people were hit by gunfire in all counties except Staten Island, with at least three people dead, police sources told The Post.

The July shootings come immediately after a violent June in the city. With a total of 205 shootings during the month, it was the bloodiest June in 24 years, since 1996, when New York Police recorded 236 incidents, the department said.

Trump said New Yorkers demanded that Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio “act now” in the face of mounting gun violence.

He added in a later tweet: “Democrats want to remove and abolish the police. This despite the low crime rates in the cities they run. CRAZY!”

In Chicago, between 11:09 pm Saturday and 2:15 am Sunday, 13 people were killed and 59 wounded in shootings, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

At least two boys, a 7-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, were among those killed. Nine of the injured were minors, the newspaper said.
