US President Donald Trump has called for support under quarterback Trevor Lawrence for the college football season to be played amid emerging cases of coronavirus in the country.

Widespread reports suggest the Big Ten follows the plug draws on its fall sports season, with the other Power 5 conferences – the ACC, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC – in talks and possibly follow.

But Clemson star quarterback Lawrence posted a statement on behalf of the athletes demanding that the season be played, with Trump joining the debate by tweeting on quote in response.

He wrote: “The student-athletes have worked too hard to cancel their season. #WeWantToPlay. ”

“We want to play football this season,” read the players’ statement. Establish universal mandate for health and safety procedures and protocols to protect college athletes from Covid-19 during all NCAA-wide conferences.

“Give the players the opportunity to report and respect their decision. Qualification guarantees whether a player chooses to play the season or not.

‘Use our voices to create open communication and trust between players and officials.

“Ultimately, an association makes college footballers. Representative of the players of all Power 5 conferences. ”
