2020 Toyota Corolla XSE

The Corolla is offered with three engines and two transmission options.

Toyota

After receiving a complete overhaul for the 2020 model year, Toyota is taking a “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” approach to the 2021 Corolla sedan. The popular four-door vehicle remains largely unchanged, adding just a boost $ 225 price tag to window sticker. A Corolla Hatchback variant is also available, but for this overview, we’ll focus on the sedan.

Powertrain and Specifications

Three engine and two transmission options remain on the order form for the Toyota Corolla 2021 sedan. Start a Corolla L, LE, or XLE and you’ll wake up to a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine that puts 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque on the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission. This combo achieves EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 29 mpg in the city, 37 mpg highway and 32 mpg combined.

Go for the LE Hybrid and you’ll get two engine generators connected to the same engine / transmission combo, but you lose 18 hp and 19 lb-ft of torque, for final horsepower figures of 121 hp and 105 lb-ft. The benefit, however, is fuel efficiency: the Corolla LE Hybrid rakes in a Prius (and, in some cases, Prius-hitting) 53 mpg city and 52 mpg highway and combined ratings.

Choose a Corolla SE or XSE and you’ll get the spiciest engine option in the sedan: a 2.0-liter I4 that produces 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. A fun and manual six-speed automatic transmission can also be combined with SE models at a premium of $ 275. 2.0-liter CVT-equipped models are slightly cheaper on the fuel pump, however, they offer ratings of 31 city mpg, 38 highway mpg and 34 combined. Manual models drop to 29 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 32 mph combined, respectively.

Inside

Toyota says the Corolla’s cabin employs a “sensual minimalism” theme. Black, beige or gray fabric seats are standard on L, LE and LE Hybrid models. Throw some extra cash on an XLE or XSE model and you’ll get “SofTex” synthetic leather seats for added luxury. In the SE and XSE grades, the front seats feature additional side and side cushions to accommodate the sportier aesthetic.

Available ambient lighting adds a pop of color to the front door trim, console tray and front cup holder. The rear occupants will also appreciate the sedan’s 34.8 inches of legroom, which is, in fact, almost 5 more than you will get in the Corolla hatchback. The Corolla sedan offers an EPA-rated 13.1 cu. Ft. Cargo load in its trunk, which is less than the more functional hatchback (17.8 cu. Ft.), But at least offers a standard 60/40 split folding rear seat for longer items. .

Technology

All Corollas except the L base feature a high-resolution 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa capabilities, as well as a six-speaker audio system. That can be upgraded to nine speakers and 800 watts of power with the JBL audio system available in SE (CVT only), XSE and XLE versions.

The Corolla also comes standard with a wealth of safety technology thanks to the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 package, which includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane departure warning, pre-collision alert, and pedestrian detection systems. .

Available wireless phone charging and integrated navigation round out the list of technology products.
