Apple Glasses patent suggests that any surface could become a virtual touch interface

While we’ve heard a lot of tidbits about Apple’s augmented / virtual reality headphone projects, we still don’t have a detailed picture of what the products will look like and how they will work.

However, a recently published patent application reveals that Apple has been studying how it could turn everyday surfaces into virtual touch interfaces. Apple proposes that the icons and buttons can be projected in AR on a table, for example, where the user can approach and interact with them. The Apple patent suggests that infrared heat detection could be used to determine where on the surface the user has touched.

A separate patent application describes how a future Apple Pencil could include a color sensor that would allow it to take real-world color samples that could then be transmitted to a paired device like an iPad. The feature would be great for art-centric applications as it makes it easy to capture accurate colors from real-world objects.
