Top 10 new movies for Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and Disney Plus (July 2020)

Cinemas in the US may be tentatively opening again, but as the coronavirus pandemic continues to delay movie releases, streaming services remain your best choice for entertainment during the hot summer months. This July, some movies intended for theatrical release will be released directly to the broadcast, plus some great movies from the past few decades worth watching (or seeing for the first time, like I did last weekend with David Fincher’s Panic Room, now streaming)

The assistent and Palm springs They both played at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. While very different in tone, the latter is a Groundhog daystyle frolicking starring Andy Samberg, while the former tackles the #MeToo movement – both are worth seeing. And the filmed production of Hamilton Initially slated for a 2021 theatrical run, it drops into Disney Plus over the weekend of July 4.

The assistent

Director Kitty Green’s striking feature about an assistant working for a particular predatory film producer never shows the unidentified boss, an obvious substitute for Harvey Weinstein. It makes their presence even more imminent and illustrates the banality of the type of abuse that the #MeToo movement highlighted. From our review:

Green doesn’t need to beautify Jane’s experiences to convey how overwhelming they are, especially when it’s clear there isn’t a good outcome for her. If she does nothing, the cycle of abuse will continue. If she talks, the only job on the line will be hers. And there is no one to turn to, because everyone around you has already accepted that this is the way it is. Green’s approach to stories: finding broader truths instead of focusing on the most sensational aspects: vaults The assistent in extraordinary territory, as it sheds light not only on the actions of abusers in power, but also on the people around them, who cannot or will do nothing to change the status quo.

Directed by James Wan (saw, Furious 7), The spell is one of the best haunted house movies of the last decade. Very loosely based on Ed and Lorraine Warren, a team of real-life paranormal experts (played by Vera Farmiga and horror expert Patrick Wilson), The spell It tells the story of a family moving to a creepy old farm. Spoiler alert: the house is haunted.

The spell dropped to Hulu earlier this year, but is now targeting WarnerMedia’s HBO Max distributor.

Broadway may be dark right now, but the public can finally see Hamilton without going to New York and spending a lot of money on a ticket. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical revolutionary (yes, that’s a play on words) originally premiered in theaters in October 2021, but as the coronavirus pandemic has changed based on release times, Disney chose to release the version. filmed on Disney Plus this weekend of July 4. With the original cast of Broadway and directed by the original director of the show, Thomas Kail, Hamilton is described as “a leap forward in the art of “live capture” that transports your audience to the world of Broadway entertainment in a unique and intimate way. “

A Series of Unfortunate Events from Lemony Snicket

No offense to Neil Patrick Harris, who portrays an admiral as Count Olaf in Netflix’s excellent adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events from Lemony SnicketBut there is nothing that beats Jim Carrey’s maniacal and sinister portrayal in the 2004 film. Spanning the first three novels, the film adaptation is like a combination of Tim Burton and Roald Dahl. The movie takes some liberties with the plot, while the Netflix series is a bit more faithful to the source material, but now that the movie is back on Netflix, you can decide for yourself which version you prefer.

Palm springs

Trapped polygon Palm springs, starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti as wedding guests caught in a Groundhog dayclassic style, when it premiered at Sundance earlier this year. Sold to Hulu and Parasite Neon dealer in the biggest Sundance deal to date, peaking at $ 17.5 million … and .69 cents (nice). David Fincher’s Panic room Is essential Home alone for adults (Forest Whitaker even refers to Joe Pesci’s iconic role as one of the bandits). Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart, a teenage girl among stars, play a mother and daughter who have to deal with armed robbers in their New York brownstone on their first night living there. They retreat to the house’s built-in panic room, and a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues. Not only does this provide plenty of opportunities for characters to say the name of the movie, it’s always a treat, but it also gives a fun twist to the house invasion thriller, especially when it’s clear that thieves (Whitaker, Jared Leto , and Dwight Yoakam) know everything about the peculiarities of the house.
