When it comes to creating a cozy home, Ariel Kaye knows one or two things about it. As the founder of Parachute Home, she has helped consumers instantly refresh their spaces with her company’s collection of bedding, fluffy towels, and other home accessories. Your latest project goes one step further to help you create the type of home you’ve always wanted. How to make a house a home It is Ariel’s first book and one to consult (especially now at a time when our homes are working so hard for us!).

How to make a house a home It is more than a coffee table book. Unlike other design guides that can make your home feel “less than” because it doesn’t have all the right accessories or a perfectly designed shelf, this one focuses on creating functional but mindful spaces that fill you with feelings of happiness, security and authenticity. . With this book, it is not proposed to design a space for the next cover of the magazine; You are creating a space that works for you, with your own style and unique home design, using Ariel’s advice on color palettes, texture layers, organization, and ambiance. As someone who has overseen the design of many spaces, from homes to retail and hospitality, and has created the products to achieve those designs, Ariel is definitely someone you can turn to for home design expertise.

We reached out to Ariel to provide her with some insight into her new book, learn how she adjusted her home to meet her current needs while she was in quarantine, and get her favorite picks from our Design Milk store:

Without giving away too much of your book, what are 3 quick tips you have for someone who wants to make their home a little more homey?

Embrace Layers: Get creative and experiment with overlapping multiple light sources, different textured fabrics, and a variety of accent elements.

Rugs Everywhere – Rugs are a great way to define space and warm things up. Your feet will thank you.

Feed your senses: Rituals and daily routines within the home are nourishing and allow your home to support you. Open windows first thing in the morning, light a candle or palo santo when you go from day to night, and a bowl of fresh citrus on the counter can make a big difference.

On the other hand, what is one mistake you think people make when trying to update their space?

A common mistake (and I have also made it) is to get carried away by the trend “of the moment” or incorporate too many trends in a space. I make sure to give myself some time before making key purchases to make sure it really is the right choice.

With shelters established across the country, the home has become a multi-functional space, even more so than before. What kinds of changes have you incorporated into your own home to make it work the way you need it for your family?

Our houses are working on overdrive right now. I live in a fairly small house with my husband and my 16-month-old baby and we all have different needs. More than ever it is important that each space is functional and can serve multiple purposes depending on the time of day. My dining table is also my desk, and when night falls it is important that I can change that space for family dinner. So I have established a space in my closet to store all my work needs. My room is the only place where I have privacy, so I added more pillows to my bed to make sure to support my back during calls and video conferences. It’s a great fit and we’re making it work!

What are some of the Design Milk Shop items you would like to have in your own home right now?

One of the positive aspects of being at home is that I enjoy cooking for my family. We have been receiving boxes of produce from farmers twice a week and using counter space to store fruits and vegetables. I loved the ribbed edges of this bowl and would love to see it in my kitchen.

This puzzle would be great entertainment at home. I love a good puzzle.
