The film, which has an international all-star cast led by Dave Bautista, captured major photography late last year and was in post-production when the pandemic hit U.S. shores, prompting a lockdown in Hollywood. Snyder, who co-wrote and directed the film, worked with post offices to keep the process going.
The film will now undergo a rapid round of re-enactment to take on the role of Notaro. Because actors are already scattered after post-filming and due to pandemic restrictions, the recording will be a combination of techniques, from actually re-detecting scenes against an acting partner to using green screen and CG technology to intervene.
Dea takes place after a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, centered on a group of mergers taking the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to attempt the biggest heist ever attempted.
Ella Purnell, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Huma Qureshi, Omari Hardwick, Hiroyuki Sanada, Garret Dillahunt, Matthias Schweighöfer, Raúl Castillo, Nora Arnezeder, and Samantha Win are also in the cast.
Snyder co-produced the film with Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller via the trio’s Stone Quarry banner.
Accusations of sexual abuse arose in June against D’Elia, accusations that the cabaret artist denied. Subsequently, he was dropped by his agency and plans for an unwritten show were thwarted by Netflix.
Notaro, a cancer survivor known for her mining of her own life in her observational material, wrote, produced and starred in the critically acclaimed semi-autobiographical Amazon series One Mississippi, which she co-produced with Diablo Cody. Her sophomore comedy album release To live was the number one best-selling comedy album of 2012 and nominated for a Grammy Award. The multi-hypenate has also released stand-up specials, including Glad to be here on Netflix and Boyish Girl Interrupted on HBO, which was nominated for a Grammy Award and an Emmy Award.
As an actress, she recently appeared in Noah Hawley’s drama Natalie Portman in 2019, Lucy in the Sky, and Paramount’s Instant Family.
