Kotaku Game DiaryKotaku Game DiaryDaily thoughts from a Kotaku staff member about a game we are playing.

Unfortunately, it seems like I’m nearing the end of my time with Paper Mario: The Origami King. I loved everything about it, well, most“But my favorite part has to be the simple act of throwing confetti.”

The Mushroom Kingdom is in total disarray when you explore it thanks to an invasion of horrifying origami golems. These bent assholes wasted no time in desecrating the game beautiful landscapes with holes and naturally it is up to Mario to fix everything. Since this is a Paper Mario game, that means filling these gaps with confetti.

Near the beginning of the adventure, Mario receives a bag of confetti to aid him in his quest, and from that point on, with the push of a button, he will fill the air around him with dozens of small pieces of paper. Using this confetti to safely traverse broken landscapes is a big part of the game – your progress in this regard is traced through each area—But Mario’s delighted expression as he heals the world makes homework a joy instead of a homework.

It gets even better once you learn that Paper Mario It doesn’t penalize you for throwing confetti whenever you want, please. The resource is essentially limitless if it is not intended to fix the stage. Occasionally, I’ll drop a couple of handfuls after a particularly frustrating battle or when I’m trying to figure out where to go next. The whole game is a great encouragement, but there is something special about these small and insignificant celebrations.

I’m a fan of games that only allow you do stuffEspecially when they dedicate an entire button to something silly. While there are minor playing reasons to honk Untitled Goose GameFor example, let’s be honest with ourselves and admit that we do it mainly because it makes us laugh. Sure, it feels great to rebuild the Mushroom Kingdom in Paper MarioBut his biggest achievement is giving me a “make the screen nice” button that I can spam every few seconds.
