Thom Brennaman leaves MLB game broadcast after airing anti-gay slur

Cincinnati Reds play-by-play announcer Thom Brennaman could be heard saying in the Fox Sports Ohio broadcast, “One of the ef * g capitals of the world,” before resuming his on-air duties. It is unknown what led to this remark and the context behind it.

The remark came before the start of the second game of a doubleheader between the Reds and the Kansas City Royals in Kansas City, Missouri.

Video containing his comments was posted on Twitter, and #FireThom started trending.

At the top of the fifth inning, after a commercial break, Brennaman, who in addition to playing for the Reds also works for Fox Sports, apologized before taking off.

Cincinnati University buildings will no longer bear the name of a Reds owner who uses racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic slurps

“I made a remark earlier last night that I think I went out of the air that I am deeply ashamed of,” Brennaman said. “If I have hurt anyone there, I can not tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart that I am so very, very sorry. I am proud of myself and think of myself as a man of faith.”

After making a call that happened in the middle of his statement, he went through.

“I do not know if I will put this headset back on,” Brennaman said. “I do not know if it will be for the Reds. I do not know if it will be for my bosses at Fox.

“I want to apologize to the people who signed my salary, to the Reds, to Fox Sports Ohio, to the people I work with. To everyone I’m offended by tonight, I’m not starting to tell you how deeply sorry I am.

“That’s not who I am and never have been, and I wish I could have had some people who can bake that. I’m very, very sorry and begging for your forgiveness.”

CNN reached out to Fox Sports, the Reds and Sinclair Broadcast Group (which owns Fox Sports Ohio) for comment.
