This Republican mayor just compared kids going back to school to kill Osama bin Laden

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (yes, he again) revealed that he had missed this class in political school.

“Martin County Superintendent Laurie Gaylord told me she reopened her schools as a mission similar to a Navy SEAL operation. Just as the SEALs overcame obstacles to bring Osama bin Laden to justice, so would the Martin County School System. also find a way to give parents a meaningful choice of instruction for individuals as well as continuous distance learning.

No no.

See, there is no question that the decisions made by administrators, parents and politicians on the question of whether children should return to school amid the still ongoing pandemic with coronavirus is a very, very difficult question – with good people on all sides of it. There is an argument for public health. An economic argument. An educational argument. And on and on and on.

But none of this is in any way comparable to a group of Marine SEALs killing bin Laden. Lykas, at all.

I think what DeSantis went for was the idea that even after one of the helicopters crash-landed during the raid on the Bin Laden connection, the SEAL team still continued to complete its mission. And so, even if there are all kinds of challenges in sending children back to school, will Florida overcome those obstacles to ensure that parents have the choice between personal and virtual learning? I think?

However, it’s just a terrible comparison. Like I was late for work because of an accident on the Beltway and said: “Jas the SEALs overcame obstacles to bring Osama bin Laden to justice, so I also found a way to get to work today. ”

Or if my flight was canceled but I took another one and I said: “Just as the SEALs overcame obstacles to bring Osama bin Laden to justice, so I also found a way to get to Atlanta. “

Right? Right!

DeSantis’ comparison comes amid a go / no-go decision by school districts in the state of Florida. At an event earlier this week in Hillsborough County, which last week only voted for virtual school for the first month of school, the mayor dismissed health concerns by offering this: “Nothing is risk-free in life.”

What, again, true! But there’s a big difference between adult men signing up to be SEALs taking on a mission they know to be very dangerous, and children (and teachers and parents) going back to school without that the science about this virus has just been worked out.

In his handling of Covid-19 in his state (and in most other things as well), DeSantis seems to take his lead directly from President Donald Trump.

“I want to get the schools open,” Trump told Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo on Thursday morning. “They should be open. The kids, as you can see, statistically it’s amazing how strong they are. Their immune system, they’s amazing. We need to get our schools open.”

What, well, OK. But even Trump did not go so far as to compare the attempt to offer personal lessons to the operation to assassinate bin Laden.

Even Donald Trump, Governor DeSantis.
