There are no high school sports until December, California says; Announcements Expected Soon in Oregon, Washington

California’s governing body for high school sports said Monday that the 2020-21 seasons will begin no earlier than December.

The California Interscholastic Federation said the normal fall, winter and spring seasons will be condensed into two seasons.

The federation set deadlines for most playoffs and championships. Soccer will complete its playoffs and championships in mid-April. The actual regular season and playoff times will be set separately.

The decisions of state and local health authorities will determine if the games are actually played.

California is currently registering high rates of coronavirus cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

Governor Gavin Newsom has issued strict guidelines that will require the majority of California’s 6.7 million K-12 students to start online classes at least next school year.

The Oregon School Activities Association executive board this week holds its annual three-day summer meeting, this year via video conference, and is expected to have an announcement about Oregon high school sports on Friday. Among the scenarios considered is the transfer of traditional sports from autumn to winter or spring.

For now, practices are still scheduled to begin on August 17, but it is extremely unlikely that OSAA’s current schedule will remain in place.

Two weeks ago, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association delayed the start date of fall practices to September 5 for soccer and September 7 for other sports. The WIAA will soon decide if further delays are necessary.
