The Yankees’ 25 25 million DJ Lamhiu Gap could have a big impact

When the meats were up for sale, I was repeatedly told that many potential buyers would not consider a purchase attempt. Why try when Steve Cohen was hiding?

Fear was getting in the way and if the 2 2 billion offer is only for Cohen after 2. 2.1 billion, then offer him only 2. 2.2 billion to go to 2. 2.3 billion. The idea is to be a lifelong fan of the Mets with the most money and at some point most of the inspiration belongs to the Mets, so why engage in a vain negotiation dance?

The same sentiment hangs over DJ Lamhiu’s free agency. Many teams are interested in it. As a club executive who would love to land him, he said, “Who wouldn’t want him? No fluke for the last two years. He’s a great, low-maintenance player.”

But many teams have fallen into the “why bother” category. They know Lemihiu will want to return to the Yankees and the Yankees want to retain their best player too. While it has historically happened, it’s pretty much 100 percent that the Yankees end up with the player.

With the exception of six weeks into the talks, the sides have been apart – more than $ 25 million, The Post has learned, confirming a swamp first reported by NJ.com and The Athletic.

Now, this could all be part of a tougher negotiation. It’s worth remembering, for example, that Cohen said he was out of the good when the initial buzz of buying mats broke out last spring. Many believed Cohen was really out and, of course, now the owner.

The Yankees are likely to reinstate Lamhue in the million 1 million range (18 18 million) in three years, and the player and his agent would love to be in the five-year, 100 100 million or more category. Is the settlement at four years ve 88 million with Westing a fifth year option that will take him over 100 million and announce January 7-ish? You don’t want to sue against the history of the Yankees or how much Lehmiu has enjoyed being a part of it for the last two years.

But free agents typically include “free”. Lemihiu will sign with the San Francisco Giants or Yomiri Giants tomorrow if he wishes.

Keep in mind that the standard maneuver from the agent playbook is to create a “disrespect” angle when it comes to leaving the structure that the customer likes: “They say they love you, but see if other teams will do a lot when offered.”

Looks like we’ve reached that part of the program. In this instance, is it designed to move the Yankees to pay more? Will the Yankees blink and pay more? Or is LeMahieu now really more open to quitting and the Yankees are more willing to let it happen if they don’t get it at their price?

If Lamihiu wants to go, teams like Blue J, Dodgers, Giants and many more will line up. He can play three positions well, score like a batting champion and provide zero headaches in the clubhouse. Add it all up and why in hell would the Yankees let go of a player who finished fourth and third in an AL MVP poll in his two years with the team?

Money.

We may scream about franchise value or previous income generated by the Yankees, but the current trend of the Yankees is dollar-conscious.

Steele Steinbrenner said the Yankees lost the most revenue in the Majors last year, among other things, fans in the stands. No idea yet – even with the optimism of a COVID-19 vaccine – when fans will return next season or not.

The cutting enthusiasm is only exacerbated by the fact that the Yankees ’third-paired Renee team defeated both the Yankees in the AL East and Division Series in the short-term 2020 season. He was annoyed by his owner who lives above his normal level in Tampa and wondered if Yankee would have to chase every shiny toy.

After all, Steinbrenner had heard of Giancarlo Stanton or Gerrit Cole advancing in previous years and would bring the title (it wasn’t). He knows it will be Lemhiu this year. Then it would be called cheap if it weren’t for Francisco Linder next year. And don’t let Aaron Judge go to free agency the following year.

The Yanks believe they will still receive the Major’s highest salary in 2021, only to fall below the-210 million luxury-tax threshold – a reduction of about 50 50 million from the 2020 season. In that scenario, they would currently spend about 35 35 million to spend so if Lemahiu comes in at 18 18 million or 20 20 million or 22 22 million, etc., which affects what else is possible, especially rotation assistance, lefty bats And maybe finding a shortstop.

There is a sense that the best free agents like Lehmiu, Trevor Bauer, JT Realmuto and George Springer are epidemic-proof – that they will make some relatively big deals. The Yanks appear in “prove it” mode. But if that’s their trend, other options are also eliminated in the slow-moving market – for example, Japan’s S Toy Moyuki Sugano must sign by the time his posting expires on January 7th.

And if Steinbrenner draws a line in the sand, what happens if the other team hits him and leaves Lamhue? Once you have Cole, Stanton and free-agent watches judge and ticket Gleber Torres, then you are the winning team. So do the Yankees have an M 30 million-ish plan ready to go to try to reduce Lamihiu’s losses and become an elite team?

It’s part of a chicken game between the Yankees and their best player.
