Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy places the Hargreeves children – again – against an emerging apocalypse. Doomsday is coming, and they must save the world and return to 2019, all without thinking about the space-time continuum to an irreversible and consequential extent. The second season packs in surprising but unmistakable moments, leading to pretty much the cliffhanger of a finale.
[Spoiler warning for season 2 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’]
The end of Season 2 presents quite the twist regarding Papa Hargreeves
At the end of the second season, Reginald Hargreeves pulls off a face mask – in a Mission Impossible–Thical fashion – to show a strange-kind, kind of wet and amphibious-like head. In other words, it becomes very clear that Sir Reginald Hargreeves is not a human at all. Does he come from another planet? If so, which one?
Does Reginald Hargreeves work independently, or was he sent from outer space on a mission to gather data, and gather a group of heroes for an ulterior motive beyond altruism and human preservation?

‘The Umbrella Academy’ cast talks about the Reginald Hargreeves revealed in season 2
During an interview with ETonline, members of The Umbrella Academy cast answered questions about Reginald and who he might be. Asked if he was a stranger, Ellen Page responded:
It looks like he would be. It seems that this could be the case. I absolutely knew of this twist and how it was done. What a thing to pull off in a way that feels round to you and really affects you.

Robert Sheehan has no doubt to claim that Reginald Hargreeves is a stranger. He stated:
That, of course, is him. I did not think she would go that literally with the space-alien thing. But I go “Yes, dear!” We’ve got the nice audience now, let’s camp it out, let’s go do a little graphic novel.

The cast also explained what they think the plan is for season 3, especially with concern about this surprising twist. David Castañeda, who plays Diego, explained that he believes that season 3 Reginald will “dive” and lighten up a bit.
Aidan Gallagher (number 5) explains that the show will probably keep more of a secret than they reveal, throwing little hints and “Easter eggs” without ever giving the full picture, which seems like a move that the writers behind the show would make.
Gallagher explains that enough will be present for fans to accept, and yet not too much that the whole motive and reason for the character’s existence will come to light. In short, season 3 may raise more questions about Reginald than it answers, as Gallagher explains.
