Great changes are happening in the royal world, as it has been revealed that Queen Elizabeth will not return to Buckingham Palace as her royal residence “in the enlightened future”. BP has always been the Queen’s primary residence, a working palace where the monarch spends most of her time, but the decision has been made to make Windsor Castle its base until the coronavirus threat is over.
As reported in The Times over the weekend, the Queen would normally return to Buckingham Palace in October after her summer holiday in Balmoral, Scotland. But this year, she will return directly to Windsor, where she and Prince Philip along with a small bubble staff have been isolated since the pandemic came out in March.
Queen Elizabeth will “continue to work with Windsor and it is understood that she would like to commute to London for meetings and events at Buckingham Palace, if it is considered safe for her to do so,” reads the report by Royal Correspondent Roya Nikkhah. When Her Majesty left Buckingham Palace in March this year, and is unlikely to return until next year, it is believed to be the longest period in her 68-year reign since she spent her home from her primary residence.
The Queen is not the only royal to have left London following the grip of the pandemic; Prince Charles and Camilla have been living in Scotland, where the heir to the throne remained while he himself was ill with the virus. Prince William and Kate Middleton, meanwhile, returned to their Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, where they hosted Prince George and Princess Charlotte. However, both married couples are expected to return to their London residences in the not too distant future.
But for now, it looks like Queen Elizabeth will remain set in Windsor Castle, where she has ridden horses and made video calls in her spare time. Dream setup.
