The option of the Tigers reliever to Toledo to make room for Carson Fulmer

The Detroit Tigers have opted for right-handed reliever David McKay to the team’s satellite camp in Toledo to make room for newcomer Carson Fulmer.

The move was announced after Saturday night’s game.

The Tigers alleged Fulmer of the Chicago White Sox waivers early Saturday. The 26-year-old was the 9th overall pick in the 2015 Vanderbilt University draft and was once a well-regarded pitching prospect.

McKay, 25, was claimed by the Seattle Mariners exemptions last summer. He pitched well for the Tigers in 2019, striking out 29 hitters in 19 innings while relying on a mid-90s fastball and a good curveball.

But speed slowed this year, and McKay had some tough starts at summer camp. He walked a hitter and allowed a home run during a brief outing in Friday’s season opener.

Manager Ron Gardenhire said it was difficult to demote a player after Saturday’s victory.

“But McKay needs to find his pitches again. His breakup ball is a little nuts. He needs to find his things and then he will come back, because he really helped us last year. ”

With the arrival of Fulmer, the Tigers now have 43 players on their 40-man roster, meaning that at least three players are likely to be on the COVID-related injury list, which is not publicly disclosed. Left-handed pitcher Daniel Norris, outfielder Daz Cameron and infielder Isaac Paredes and Sergio Alcantara are among those who missed all or part of the summer camp; Norris and Paredes publicly acknowledged that they tested positive for COVID-19.
