The opening of the UGA 2020 vs. Virginia season was officially canceled

Georgia will now have a different start to the season for the 2020 college football season. On Wednesday, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced that they would implement a conference-only schedule for fall sports, following the actions of the Big Ten and Pacific Conferences. 12 a few weeks ago. That announcement includes the fact that every ACC member can play against a non-conference opponent in soccer, but the details will remove Georgia’s chances of facing Virginia.

“All non-conference opponents of the game, selected by the respective school, must be played in the home state of the ACC institution, and all non-conference opponents must comply with the requirements of the medical protocol according to what was agreed by the ACC, “said the conference statement.

This format means a On Labor Day, Monday, September 7, the matchup against Virginia at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium as part of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic will no longer happen.

According to the Macon-Telegraph, Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity confirmed that the announcement “Eliminate the UVA game. “

Georgia would have had to travel to Virginia for the game against the Cavaliers to take place. The Nov. 28 home game against state rival Georgia Tech would meet the conference’s requirements, but that also remains questionable, as the SEC has yet to announce its decision on how the conference will handle the schedule for this season.

The last time Georgia and Georgia Tech, a game known as Clean Old-Fashioned Hate, did not play was in 1924, due to the interruption of World War I. If the SEC has a similar course of action, then the home games against East Tennessee State (September 12) and Louisiana-Monroe (September 26) will also not take place this season.

That could mean Georgia would open the 2020 season against Alabama at Tuscaloosa.

A 10-game SEC schedule would mean Georgia adding a pair of conference opponents to the roster, likely one at home and one away. It remains to be seen how SEC programs will address rescheduling with 2020 lost opponents, if at all.
